Iurii Dombrovskii (1909-1978) became widely known after his first novel Khranitel' Drevnostei (1964). His next novel, Fakul'tet Nenuzhnykh Veshchei (1978), confirmed his reputation as one of the very few significant writers of the second half of the twentieth century. Like many people of his generation he was arrested several times (1932, 1937, 1939, 1949). In exile he worked as an archeologist, journalist, and teacher.
