Donguibogam is a medical book compiled by Heo Jun on medical knowledge and practices. Under the king's order, he started the compilation in 1596 with the help of many medical experts and scholars, and it was completed during King Gwanghae's reign in 1610. There had been medical literatures before, but they were from China whose theories on prescriptions differed from each other, thus hard to apply it. Also the necessary Chinese medicines were too expensive or hard to get. The Joseon's 14th King Seonjo sought to compile a literature fit for Joseon, so accumulated medical knowledge of East Asia was compiled and made into one book. The word 'Dongui (east medicine)' is equivalent to the Chinese medical science 'Bookui (north-)' or 'Namui (south-)' which indicate its independency related to our traditional medical science.

The book was divided into five chapters by the illness and its treatment, and was written in 25 books. These included 4 books of Naegyeongpyeon on physiologic functions and equivalent disorders of internal organs (liver, lungs, kidneys, hear, and spleen), 4 books of Oehyeongpyeon on the functions and related illnesses on visible parts of the human body, 11 books of Japbyeongpyeon on diagnosis and healing methods, 3 books of Tangaekpyeong on methods for collecting medicinal herbs and plants and prescribing medication, one book of Chimgupyeon on acupuncture procedures, and two books of index.

Before the 19th century, concept on preventive medicine and national health policy was not widely known, but the Donguibogam held these concepts which was not common worldwide, and this led the progress of the East Asian medical science. Some parts were written in Hangul, so not only experts but also commoners who lacked education can easily understand and use it. Unlike previous literatures, the Donguibogam gave clear reference list to show that it was not an arbitrarily written knowledge.

The book is also being introduced and read widely in China and Japan, and was republished in many parts of Asia for more than 40 times, being the role model of traditional medication in East Asia. It also holds its value as historical volume, but also is still used in modern society, and shows modernized philosophy as well as medical knowledge. Its public characteristic on medication was acknowledged, and was registered as UNESCO Memory of the World in 2009, reflecting today's policy and spirit on public medication
