During the Summer of 1985, DR. Slote conducted fieldwork in Korea, in the village of Nai Op in Kyongsangbuk-do province. There he studied Korean personality structure and child-rearing practices; this manuscript is one output from that fieldwork. Nai Op is one of the most famous lineage villages of the Uisong Kim clan. In Korea, many people have the same surname (Kim, Park and Lee are the most common), so surnames are classified by the name of the clan's village of origin, such as Uisong or Andong. In traditional Korea, there were four social classes. The highest was Yangban, the scholar class; the next was mid-level managers and administrators; next were farmers and merchants; lowest was the servant. Our primary purpose is to study the psychocultural dynamics of the Confucian family, both those that are within conscious awareness and those that are unconscious. We are concerned with the range of human behaviour, but particularly the underlying motivation and the nature of interpersonal relationships. There will be additional villages as well as much attention directed to city dwellers in years to come. Although the study is only in its second research reason, some fascinating tentative observations have begun to emerge. Central to any study of the family, and of great consequence to the future of all nations, is the manner in which the children are reared. A preliminary analysis of the data indicates that the quality of parenting of the young children in Korea provides a most impressive milieu for growth and constructive development. We seem to be seeing a very sensitive parenting uniquely addressed to the needs of the young child. In addition, there appears to be an emergence of a newer pattern of fathering that includes direct and active involvement in caring for the children and an overt expression of affection both at home and in public. This is a recent development and in dramatic contradistinction to the traditional role of the Confucian fathe
