This textbook is designed to introduce students with no previous linguistic training to the theory and analysis of generative grammar. It both teaches students the techniques and enables them to understand how grammatical theory is developed in syntactic analysis. It also introduces the most recent far-reaching changes in generative grammar and provides a historical perspective on the development of the theory.
