The history of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, like most public art museums in the US, is one of civic spirit and private philanthropy. The majority of the works of art in the Museum's collection were gifts from generous and public-minded individuals. This tradition is equally as strong today. Thus, it is only fitting to celebrate the Museum's 125th anniversary, with an exhibition and book devoted to a remarkable group of masterpieces acquired over the past few years. The donors of these gifts - in some cases a single extraordinary object and, in other instances, an entire collection lovingly assembled over several decades - are mainly civic-minded Philadelphians and a few distinguished collectors across the country, who have admired the Museum from afar. In addition to gifts of works of art, the roster of Anniversary acquisitions encompasses a number of exciting purchases, made possible by generous contributions of funds raised for the specific purpose of enhancing the Museum's collections. The publication of this exhibition catalogue marks this incredible anniversary. The gifts given in honour of this occasion are illustrated, primarily in colour, and discussed in brief catalogue entries, written by well-respected curators and art-historians. These entries serve as an introduction to the objects and are sure to stimulate further interest in the pieces and in visiting the museum itself.
